There has been a lot of talk in the national media lately about guns. Today, we have two appraisers on the program who both choose to carry a firearm on appraisal inspections for personal protection. Mike and Lisa join us to discuss why they choose to protect themselves by carrying a concealed weapon.
I carry 2 weapons in my car. Depending on the property and if it vacant, I may choose to carry on my person. I have had a CC permit since 1972 and never had to pull the weapon. I like it that way.

While I can appreciate and respect the choice to carry, I personally do not. If and when I feel the need to carry a weapon to work-I will choose a different profession. With my experience, I could work at an AMC handing out stips! No gun required
I too have a North Carolina CC permit and carry concealed to every appraisal. Like the others, I do REO work and some for AMC who send in not so nice areas. That said things can happen everywhere and being prepared is better than not, especially with the terrorist situation these days.

Great topic, an AMC's guidelines/requests DO NOT trump the 2nd Amendment.
I would rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6! I carried many times but that was because the majority of my work REO - fannie, fha, va and so on

I live in a very rural area which has 2 very depressed towns (Aberdeen and Hoquiam). There are other towns in the county that are depressed as well. These generate homes which invite vagrants and drug attics that don't care about your duties or intentions. They see you as a threat to their livelihood, even though they are there illegally.
So, I carry to many appraisals as well. I do not bring my weapon into the home if the owner is home or I'm meeting someone. But, I absolutely carry my weapon into all vacant homes accessed via realtor or contractor key box.
Would I drop an AMC if they told me I could not carry to these properties? Hell yes. My rights, my business, my safety!

Good topic, the appraisers were spot on. AZ is an open carry state, I have opted to not carry while working, but I do keep one in my RV, to avoid being cornered. I am a big guy, that may be giving me a false sense of security.
When we had a few women working in our office I told them they would have to buy their own gun, if they wanted, and I would pay for a CCW class for them. They all took the the class and thanked me for it because it made them feel safer.
I have a concealed weapons permit and carry. Many of my assignments warrant concern for myself being they consist of urban foreclosures, vacant, abandoned and divorce properties. I also cover many isolated rural properties. I'd rather be safe than sorry....even if only once.
I've been appraising and selling since '89 when I left active duty. I carried in NY and I carry in GA. I've been in Atlanta since '94 and did FNMA work during the crash years. To say it was an adventure would be an understatement and we frequently had contact with indigenous personnel. This ranged from squatters to addicts to drug dens to thieves to those literally stripping a home clean. Usually there were no issues but on occasion reminding them that nothing good comes of starting something while making the .45 on the hip just a bit noticeable, worked well. I carry, I would pull if needed and I would shoot.
